Mike Augello: Leafs escape the Wild with win; ramifications of the Nylander deal - mikeinbuffalo
Another 40+ shot game for Andersen.
The long term ramifications of the deal seem perfectly structured for Nylander to be dealt next summer. With Dubas having to re-sign both Marner and Matthews, year two of the contract is nearly all signing bonus ($8.3 Million) and very little in base salary ($700,000), which means after July 1, a team would be acquiring a 23-year-old top-six winger for nearly league-minimum money and the next four years at $6 Million per season. That scenario would be similar to last summer’s Ryan O’Reilly trade, where Buffalo agreed in principle to a deal with St. Louis in late June and traded him after paying a $7 Million bonus on July 1.
Yup, Nylander for Pietrangelo on July 2nd, 2019, the same day Marleau retires in Arizona. |

Except St. Louis paid the signing bonus. He was traded on July 1 after the league confirmed his bonus could be paid at any time on July 1, and part of the trade was the Blues paying it. |

Wrong.
The only reason they trade Nylander is if they can't afford him. If that is the case, they won't be picking up a salary like Pietrangelo.

Wrong. They can definitely trade Nylander to improve the team defense. Fitting that defender isn't necessarily an issue if they're smart about it.
They can afford Pietrangelo. Nylander + Brown = Pietrangelo extension (And one year at 6.5 next year which is very advantageous too). Let Hainsey walk, they might even be able to fit Gardiner too using Hainsey's money. Or let Gardiner walk and replace him with an ELC. |

Now we’re gonna have to deal with Pietrangelo trades all year... I wish there was a block option... |

Agreed - with the money committed to offense (and rightfully so) and no issues in net and a fantastic pool of defensive talent on the way, there is no need to move any key pieces unless forced to by salary constraints. (frank) getting older washed up d-men unless it is on expiring contracts at the trade deadline and the price is right. Getting a top pairing d-men is best acheived through the draft. A significant number of great d-men are drafted in the mid to late first round and even the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Not long ago you were sending 3 or 4 players and picks to get Erik Karlsson - how's that working for you? Dubas, Shanny and the boys have it under control, take a pill, relax and enjoy the ride.

Yeah, top pair RHD in his prime is "washed up". Sure.
But expiring contracts make sense. Sure.

That literally takes years and in case you haven't noticed, the Leafs are rather bad at drafting top pair D unless they're 5th overall picks like Rielly was. Don't see the Leafs drafting that high any time soon. That leaves few options, one of the best being, acquiring one in a trade for a surplus (Nylander). |

I rather like travis dermott.
And the leafs have 2 good dman I the pipes. Are they top pairing? We will see.
Calle Rosen could probably take a 3rd pairing spot nicely too. |

I like them too. But at their age, it's rather ridiculous to expect any of them to become top pairing D in the next 3 years. They'd all be much better suited as cheap players they use as their #4, #5 and #6 guys.
Rielly would benefit tremendously with Pietrangelo by his side. The PP, with a big right hand shot, would also benefit. The PK would improve. The defensive zone coverage and shot numbers against would improve. It's the right move and they should definitely be trying to make it happen. |

Who are you trying to kid - besides yourself? Pietrangelo has 11 points as of today - tied for 50th and is a brutal -8 on a team that is defense first and has little offence. Ron Hainsey a 37 year old making $3 million and at best is our 4th or 5th best defender has 11 points and is a plus 16 on an offence first team this year for (frank) sakes. Tell me again why you want to trade Nylander a top six right winger on any NHL team in the league for that?

Rosen is having a good year, Dermott is excellent, two 1st rounders not far off and a few others including Borgman and Rasanen are still decent prospects - leafs have a very good pipeline going.
